Bruce and all other who are interested
I am prompted to reply to your comment re unmarked graves.
As you know I am a Lloyd and Hart descendent, and a Kelly relative. I am also on the Greta Cemetery Trust. There are 2 Lloyd, 1 Kelly and other "sympathiser" families on the trust, which dates back to 1869.
Legally, the only person's) able to give permission for graves to be marked, altered etc is the person who has right of burial. In the case of the years passing, it belongs to the person/family who can
establish that they have this right. The Trust must ensure that there is no arguing over whether a grave may or may not be marked. And both legally and morally permission will not be given to probe any graves
For instance, we are about to place markers on the Lloyd graves. I can do this as there is a clear line of descent. ( The plaques are already done). As time progress' we will mark all our family in the area.
In regard to the Kelly (&descendent) graves, the only ones who are able to touch these graves are the family members themselves - Neither me, the trust or anyone else can change this without the express permission of the Kelly family. This is a law that must be adhered to. Even if the Trust approached a family and
offered to place a headstone on a grave free of charge, permission to do so might be refused. There is no comeback.
It is the Kelly family's' right and responsibility to mark their family members. I realise that there are many who find it sad, frustrating etc, but that's just unfortunate. There are over 500 graves in the Greta Cemetery with approx 150 marked. Many have no descendents to care for them.
I am extremely proud to sit on the Trust and hold it my responsibility to care and nurture the Cemetery. As a non profit
organization we cannot actively seek donations and therefore rely on Grants and Goodwill. All the work is done through volunteers - Greta families.
A new fence and trees went in last year. I will plant Heritage roses along the front road. There will be new wrought iron gates and in the not too distant future a memorial to the pioneers and settlers of the district. We would love to put a rotunda of some sort there also( the style in keeping with the setting) But it all costs money!
Stay tuned
I am more than willing to discuss any issue around this or any other topic, please ask.
Just discovered the forum - Fantastic idea

bruce johnson hi noeleen
thanks for your comments on greta cemetery, this is a important subject with our family as we have 15 relatives interned there, some are marked some are not,
and is not easy to talk about, you did bring up some good points.
I guess you are refering to my comment, which i shall re word.
"Unfortunately the main people on the Kelly side of the story do not have marked graves, which is sad, compared with the monuments and headstones that the policeman have which are very flash! "
There was nothing meant by it, i was just comparing the two different situations between the flash gravestones and monuments that the main policeman have, (and they must of had lots of money), they got to mark their plots.
My comment was meant to mean its sad that the "kelly" family's could not mark their plots at that time for their future decendents for many reasons , its makes it hard to find where people are so you can pay your respects.
i have to take my map which i made with the help of christine Mc when i visit our folks there, so i get the right unmarked plots.
You guys do a great job of keeping the place looking good, there is always something new when i go there
I am glad you are enjoying the forum

Hi Bruce,
I know you didn't mean anything - and certainly no offence. You just raised a point that I'd had on my mind for quite some time.
Most people understand and respect the sensitivity of the whole cemetery business. There are others out there on the "fringe", who make the Trust (& especially Christine) to be at fault. Those who are really interested and take the time will know, as you do, what the legalities etc are. Others seem to think that we just haven't "bothered" .
The trust would love to restore some of the older graves, which have no one caring for them , but again, $$$$$$$$$$$ and permission.
As so many will visit your site and read the forum, I thought that I would throw the thought on the table , so to speak.
Just been up and organised for the roses (which are being locally grown & donated ). HTey will not go in this year, but beggars can't be choosers!

Hello Noellene, just read your story about the ongoing work at the cemetery. Its excellent that this most spiritual place is being restored but it also worries me that these significant sites will be open to abuse by the d*@#kheads out there who decide that a certain headstone will look great as an ornament in there own lounge room. I have been privillaged to be shown some of the actual graves and all are closely kept to myself out of pure respect to the Kelly story. I was at the Stringy site when I got talking to the ranger who explained that the police memorial plaque had been knocked off. As you can imagine they were not happy about it, long story but they recovered it in a house in Benalla where it is back on display again more soundly bolted down. I have to the utmost respect for your family and all players in the story, I just hope that it is not ruined by the small minority..................Tim
